Sheep' s Green May 2012

Sheep’s Green, Cambridge, UK. Part of Sunday in my City

Unknown Mami

Making a real attempt to start weekly updates on the blog each Sunday – am a little obsessed with trying to remember everything, and I think it would give me some peace of mind to make sure I do it, though whether or not an interesting read for everyone else, I cannot say! Also going to start doing Sunday in my City (though the picture may or may not have been taken on Sunday)…the above was taken Thursday.

But onward!

Blogging for June: Day 01 - My favourite song

I'm going to try this meme I found during the fabulous [community profile] three_weeks_for_dw fest for the month of June to see if I could manage to post something everyday. I think it's going to be fun.

So without any further ado...

Favourite Song: "Sunny Came Home" by Shawn Colvin

Sunny came home to her favorite room
Sunny sat down in the kitchen
She opened a book and a box of tools
Sunny came home with a mission

Why? It is of course virtually impossible to select your favourite anything of all time, but it didn't take me too long to realise that this was a song that I keep returning to time and time again.

She says days go by I'm hypnotized
I'm walking on a wire
I close my eyes and fly out of my mind
Into the fire

I love it for many reasons. The tune is folky, but it's also haunting and melancholy, something that creeps into you. Colvin's voice has a delicate touch, but the way she sings it, and the lyrics themselves, have a quiet ferocity and determination that raises in pitch at the end like the fire itself. I feel in the lyrics there is strength, there is anger, but there is also a whole lot of hope.

Light the sky and hold on tight
The world is burning down
She's out there on her own and she's alright
Sunny came home

And the music video, which I only saw for the first time this morning. There are shades of Shosanna Dreyfus from Inglourious Basterds in it. Just shades. You'll have to see the film to know what I mean. ;)
