Done, not quite dusted
Aug. 12th, 2009 08:15 amSo I finally completed the first draft of my new short story (working title, 'Surge', though that might change). It's been...years actually that I completed an original short, so I'm quite pleased that I made myself do it. 10,500 words in the end, which, even though I originally thought it would be 7000, is probably necessary for the story. Maybe a few words less at the end (it could do with some tightening in general at any rate).
Right now, it looks a little like Frankenstein's monster; I have all the ideas and elements there that I want to explore in the story, but it feels badly stitched together and it's very rough around the edges. In my mania to finish it last night I know the ending is very, very scattered. Also suffers from
I'll put it aside for now, and come back to it in about two weeks time, at which point I'll try to make it look more like a Michelangelo statue than Mary Shelley's creation (though perhaps that's aiming the bar too high - perhaps an analogy with a lesser artist - Cellini?)
And speaking of Renaissance artists, I haven't posted on my short trip to Florence yet. I have something written about it too, so I'll aim to do that later today as well as post my picture from there.
